10 Useful Downsizing Tips for Seniors

If you’re reading this blog, it’s probably safe to assume you’re considering downsizing from your current home. If so, that’s great! At Harrogate, we’ve helped hundreds of Ocean County seniors downsize, and the number one thing we recommend is to find someone you trust. That’s why we’ve partnered with Dina Blackwood of Finding Spaces for years.

To ensure a more stress-free move, Dina recommends the following decluttering and downsizing tips:

  1. Start Early: If downsizing your home is in your future, it’s never too early to start sorting through your belongings. Go through your closets and storage spaces to start weeding out items you no longer need.
  2. Take It in Stages: Spring cleaning, holidays and any other family gatherings are a great time to go through things and decide what can be given to family and friends, what can be donated and what can be thrown out.
  3. One Room at a Time: Trying to do your entire house all at once can be stressful. If time allows, focus on completing one room before moving on to the next.
  4. Make a List: Moving is a process. Keeping a list of things to do, as well as phone numbers and contacts who can help, will keep you on track.
  5. Ask for Help: Working with family and friends can help get the job done faster while reducing stress. If money allows, there are also companies that can pack and move your belongings.
  6. Chipped, Broken or Stained: Charities don’t want nonworking Christmas lights, snagged clothes, lidless plastic Tupperware, or any items that they can’t sell or reuse. When in doubt, throw it out.
  7. Toss Replaceable Items: Old spices, junk mail, old magazines, outdated medications, unused toiletries, candles, stuffed toys and the contents of the junk drawer probably aren’t worth moving.
  8. Get Ready to Sell: Determine what updates and changes you need to make to get the most out of your home.
  9. Hire a Moving Company: To make sure you hire an experienced, reliable and insured moving company, ask for references.
  10. “First-Day” Box: Place items in this box like toiletries, prescriptions, cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies, basic tools, etc., so you’ll have everything you need for your first night in your new home.
