Resident Helen Clayton Maintains a Burning Passion for Service

70 years is a long time to be involved in anything. Some marriages last that long, but for the most part, few of us can point to something in our lives we’ve spent seven decades on. Helen Clayton is the exception to that rule.

Beginning when she was 22, Helen started volunteering with the Pleasant Plains Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary in Ocean County. She’s spent the past 70 years helping provide refreshments to firefighters anytime they respond to a fire or other emergency in the area. Her late husband was even a volunteer firefighter with the Pleasant Plains department.

Today, Helen says she has no plans to slow down. She’s dedicated to service, and intends to stay involved with the auxiliary as long as time allows.

“I have so much respect and appreciation for what our firefighters do,” said Helen. “Being a member of the auxiliary is just my way of giving thanks and support, and I still enjoy it as much as I did 70 years ago.”

Charles Benjamin, executive director at Harrogate, says Helen is a shining example of the many possibilities for seniors, even after retirement.

“All of us at Harrogate are so inspired by the dedication that Helen has for the auxiliary,” said Charles. “To keep that passion for helping others burning for 70 years is something we all aspire to do.”
