Harrogate’s Marge Martinkus Inspires Through Song and Survival
Anyone who’s had the pleasure of listening to the Harrogate choir has heard Marge Martinkus expressing joy through song. It wasn’t that long ago, however, when it seemed as if Marge’s singing days might be over. After already surviving two forms of cancer, a major stroke left her unable to eat or walk.
“If it hadn’t been for my decision to live at Harrogate, I might be singing a different tune,” says Marge. “Because of the health center here, I’ve recovered and I’m living life to the fullest. Every day is a gift.”
As a Life Care Community, Harrogate provides a continuum of care that includes health services, when needed. Marge says there’s no question her recovery happened, in part, because she didn’t have to be transferred to a hospital or other community. She was cared for right here at Harrogate.
“One of the many benefits of living at Harrogate is the peace of mind that comes from knowing you’re taken care of,” says Executive Director Charles Benjamin. “Every time I see Marge and think of her story, I’m reminded of the important role we play in the lives of seniors.”
Today, Marge is living more independently than she ever thought possible following the stroke. She also credits the wonderful friends she’s made at Harrogate.
“These people are family,” she says. “They check on you, they take the time to get to know you and form close bonds with you. I’m a blessed woman. No doubt about it.”
