Dashing to Senior Olympic Gold

If you ever thought running was only for the young, Tess Greenquist is proving it’s for the young at heart. Harrogate’s 92-year-old resident certainly didn’t let age stand in her way of competing in this year’s Senior Olympics, and her determination paid off in the form of a gold medal in the 100-meter dash!

“We’re really proud of her,” said Harrogate Fitness Director Becky Harris. “When she first told me she wanted to compete in the 100-meter dash, I knew she had a chance to inspire us, and she definitely did!”

This wasn’t Tess’s first time on the track or her first gold medal. She competed in the 1500-meter race walk two years ago, taking home the gold in that event as well. You might say she’s had a pretty good “track record” since getting involved in the Senior Olympics.

Harrogate Executive Director Don Johansen says Tess is providing yet another example of residents who’ve found a unique Harrogatunity in retirement.

“Tess, like so many of our residents, is someone who has truly found ways to inspire others,” he said. “Her energy and enthusiasm for fitness makes us proud, and reminds us that it’s never too late to pursue a passion.”

Tess won this year’s event with a time of 55.4 seconds. The oldest world record holder among women ran the 100-meter dash in about 35 seconds, which makes Tess’s time look pretty impressive for her first time competing!
