Our Story
Over 40 years ago, Ed & Ann Clark and Alan & Ethel Schnetzer, two local couples, discovered continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) while vacationing in Florida. It was clear to them that Ocean County, New Jersey needed a community in which aging adults could live comfortably and still have an active, social lifestyle. The Clarks and Schnetzers connected with Life Care Services®, a leader in retirement living. Together they developed a plan for a CCRC in Ocean County, and that dream came to fruition as Harrogate.
Harrogate was incorporated in 1982 and on July 12, 1988, admitted its first resident. The Clarks and Schnetzers became residents as well! Harrogate is committed to our Founders’ original goal: to provide a place where seniors can age well, pursing an active lifestyle with the comfort of knowing that as their health status changes over time, care is available right on campus. In their honor, Harrogate’s auditorium is named after the Clarks, and our dining room is named after the Schnetzers.
As Harrogate has grown over the years, one thing remains the same: the leadership, staff, volunteers, donors, residents, and families all working together are what make Harrogate such a vibrant, engaging community. There’s no place quite like Harrogate, and it’s our kind, welcoming culture that makes us so unique.
Where did the name “Harrogate” come from?
Harrogate is a quaint little town nestled in North Yorkshire County, England. In the 16th & 17th Centuries it became known as “the happiest place to live” in Britain because its spa water was said to have healing qualities. In actuality, the water contained higher levels of iron, Sulphur, and salt, which also contributed to the lush greenery of the surrounding countryside. Early planners of the American Harrogate community knew of this legendary spa town and wanted to create their own quaint community nestled in the lush landscape of Ocean County, New Jersey. Hence, the name Harrogate. We pay tribute to our British inspiration by treating residents to lovely afternoon teas. The soothing atmosphere is guaranteed to make everyone feel relaxed and pampered, just as any spa town would do.

Residents enjoy peace of mind knowing that as their health needs change over time, they will always have access to a full range of health services. Independent Living residents can receive Assistance in Living Support to help them remain in their apartment home. Additionally, our Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation services have earned a 5-Star Quality Measures rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

As a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit community, we answer to residents, not shareholders. Our profits are always reinvested in Harrogate to improve our buildings, increase staff, add new services and amenities, and enhance residents’ lives. We plan to provide exceptional care for seniors for many generations to come.
