Rosa Turano

Meet Rosa Turano

Rosa Lievore Turano was born in Schio, a province of Vincenza located in the northern region of Veneto. She and her family moved to the United States on July 3, 1956. Among her earliest memories was helping her mother prepare pasta con Sugo di Pomodori e Tonno on Friday evenings. “I love to cook,” laughed Rosa. “My husband, Jack, always loved my cooking, which was a good thing since we were married 57 years. Even when we lived at Harrogate, I always cooked him dinner. But we never missed lunch in the dining room here. It’s a wonderful way to socialize with friends.”

Rosa and Jack raised their two sons in Staten Island, then moved to Manhattan for their own empty nester adventures for 20 years. Eventually they downsized and moved to a 55+ community in Monroe Township for another 20 years. “We thought that was going to be our last move,” said Rosa. “But as they say, ‘Man has plans, and God laughs.’ My husband fell and landed in rehab for three months. Our house wasn’t the right fit for his needs anymore, so I reached out to A Place for Mom to help us with our search. That was how we found Harrogate. It had all the supports in place to help me care for Jack, and it offered both of us the socialization we were looking for. As soon as we moved here in 2019, I signed us up for every activity they had. We went on all the bus trips, out to lunch at restaurants, and on all the shopping trips. We were in the audience for every concert and lecture. We had a ball! It gave us a new lease on life.”

Eventually, Jack passed, and Rosa found herself surrounded by her Harrogate friends that felt like family. “Sono grata,” said Rosa. “That means ‘I am grateful!’ I am grateful for all the years I had with Jack. I am grateful for the support we found at Harrogate when we moved here. And I am grateful for the friendships I have found here later in life that fill my heart with so much love. Harrogate isn’t just my home. It’s filled with people who feel like family to me. And that’s really something special.”

At 82 years of age, Rosa lives a very active lifestyle at Harrogate. “I’m part of the Hospitality Committee which welcomes new residents,” said Rosa. “I’m part of the Activities Committee, and we have a ball putting together events like the Rootbeer Float Social. And I’m a Eucharist minister, assisting Deacon Jack with Mass every Sunday. I’ve worked since I was 14 years old, and now I find it so rewarding to volunteer in ways that bring joy to others. I love it!”

Rosa has one piece of advice for those considering a move to Harrogate. “Come here while you’re young,” said Rosa. “There’s so much to do here, and so many wonderful people to meet. Move to Harrogate now and give yourself many years to enjoy the fun and friendships here. I have lived many places in my lifetime and traveled the world. Harrogate is a one of the best chapters of my life story.”

You are a dynamo, Rosa. Your happy optimism is contagious!
